Day 65 - Middle of Nowhere - Emerald

Good morning Middle of Nowhere!

I was fortunate to wake early and catch the beautiful start to the morning.  I was however surprised to see that both cattle trucks had departed during the night and even more surprised that we hadn't heard a thing despite having windows open in the van for ventilation.

A massive number of geese flew from a large dam at the foot of the hill we had camped at in groups of 2 and four.  Their loud honking calls could be heard for miles as they flew off to some unknown destination.

Skippy was keeping an eye on us from across the road.

We headed off quite early after having a cuppa and some breakfast given there was very little to pack up.  The road continued to be horrendous and I think if there had been a turnoff sooner we might have headed back across to the coast.  A few of the power poles look like they could do with a bit of support.

We were originally going to stop at another freecamp in Clermont but given we had freecamped the night before and Clermont was only 50km down the road we decided to push on to Emerald at just over 150km and giving us an additional day up our sleeve.   The caravan park at Emerald was quite big and already had quite a few vans in when we arrived at a bit after 10.00am.  I wondered if being this early we would get in, but it was fine.

Kitty was definitely ready for another bath and of course that meant also washing dog beds and blankets so that was virtually my afternoon done.  Shane went out and did a bit of shopping and took a few photos and although we tossed up staying the extra night and looking around we decided to move on tomorrow to Barcaldine.

Given the peak season is supposed to have already ended we are continually surprised at how many travellers are still on the road.  The van park despite being quite large was virtually full by nightfall.  It just goes to show how popular caravanning has become these days.  The van parks must be loving the "extended" season.

We had a lovely dinner outside under the awning and sat chatting about our week while the sun set and well into the evening although it was so cool outside that I resorted to wearing a woolly cardigan to keep warm - a sad reminder of things to come.

178km
Total - 10,296 km
Top today 29°c - expecting overnight 11°c
