Day 73 - Roma - St George

Good morning Roma!

Thankfully the wind settled down over night and although it was cold we were toasty warm and had a good sleep.  So good in fact that I woke to bright light streaming in through the gaps at the windows but thankfully Shane had woken early enough to catch the sunrise.

There wouldn't have been much more sleep to be had anyway as a huge rubbish truck arrived at 6.30am to collect the contents of a large skip so I'm guessing most of our caravanning neighbours were up by then too.

We were back on the road again turning south onto the Carnavon Highway and hoping for a bit of relief from the wind.  Roadkill again featured prominently requiring some strategic manoeuvres to avoid running over the poor buggers again - though I'm sure looking at some of the older kills they have been hit many more times by the trucks that don't bother to avoid them.

Some 80km down the road is the town of Surat which has a charming sign at both entrances.  On the banks of the Balonne River, Surat's claim to fame is fishing but it also had a very striking Shire Hall.

There isn't much else about this trip to report on as there are so few townships between Roma & St George.  We pulled into the very tidy town of St George at around 12.30pm opting for a park located on the edge of town near the Balonne River and after setting up we headed out for a look around.  The area is quite lovely however the flies are simply overwhelming.

The Balonne River is very muddy but provides habitat for birds and judging by the amount of roo poo on the ground has other visitors as well.

Did not anticipate seeing a vineyard here but yes there is a local winery - no we didn't stop for a visit.

Over the river you were able to drive down to the river bank and we were amazed to see these incredible old trees that have over the years had the soil washed away from their roots leaving them exposed.

This strange tree looked a little out of place.

Back over the bridge and to the supermarket for a few supplies and then home.  We had a lovely meal outside without the awning open as we were parked in such a way that the van itself provided shade.  The lights in the van park were bright enough to read by but as the evening wore on it was too cold to sit outside so we headed for the warmth of the van.
