Day 21 - Alice Springs

Good morning Alice Springs!

Day Dread had arrived.  Actually I had woken up in the middle of the night running the angles through my mind on how to extract ourselves from the site.  Isn't anxiety a wonderful friend......  However our first thought was - could we stay another day and take in the Camel Cup (which we had missed by a week on our last trip) without impacting our plans further down the line in so far as the places we knew we would have to pre-book.  First job was to find out if our site might be available for another night.

After making a non-committal start to the packing of the inside of the van, having to wait until 8.00am when the office was open, unfortunately we had to keep packing as they were fully booked.  And then I remembered that the showgrounds opened for campers only when all of the caravan parks were booked out.  A quick call to confirm and we were ready to relocate.  Everything packed I decided it was better for Shane to drive and me to instruct.  It went well and we got the car and van out without incident.  Anyone who has towed a van will understand the stress of being in a difficult site.

The only reason we booked with this park was it was dog friendly but if we were to come back to Alice again I highly doubt I would look to book with them again.  While we really appreciated the assistance with fixing the wiring (which cost us the price of a slab), the park is difficult to navigate, tired and not cheap.  And then there were the permanents which lined one side of the park.  What a bunch of "interesting" structures they were.  And the entire time we were there we only saw one person come in or out of all those vans.  Conclusion?  Vanpires!

After driving a mere 10km to the showgrounds, we got ourselves set up, had a bite to eat and headed up the road to the racecourse.  Given the temperature today was 27 degrees we left Miss Kitty in the caravan which was lovely and cool.

I'm so glad we changed our plans - it was such an interesting experience.

And then of course there was the Duck Cup draws.  Buy a raffle ticket and if your duck is the first to drop into the bottom pond you win!  We didn't win but what an awesome fundraiser.

We didn't stay for the entire meet, it was pretty hot standing in the sun and if you gave up your position on the fence to head to the shade, there was little hope of getting back there.  After watching a few races and purchasing a new camel friend for "Eff" - our little trip mascot goat, we headed back to the van to prepare for tomorrow's departure.

While we were talking about our time in Alice and some of the memories we have, Shane came across this Youtube video of the Yamba song.......  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFfV8HH6kT4&fbclid=IwAR07cQXbrjGDTtZGd2i6NTmzW-r8agYu9R7KpdcaJayXha1nfFRTEPucyxM
