Another interesting development in that the battery monitor started beeping at about 5.00am. Not sure what the issue was and not wanting the battery to be completely flat I got up and turned off the big freezer. It would be hours before that thing would start to thaw so I figured it could sit until we were on the road. Back to sleep it was for another couple of hours but thankfully we woke just in time to catch another gorgeous sunrise.
We were on the road this morning before 9.30am - once again facing a bit of a drive - today was 319km to Coober Pedy. It was an interesting drive, and due to stopping along the way we ended up having to pass this behemoth not once, but twice.
Shortly after we passed this we were passed by a truck that was transporting what can only be described as a big ass tyre! It turned off into one of the iron mines shortly after.
Along the way we passed over the Royal Flying Doctor Service's landing strip - a section of the Stuart Highway that the RFDS uses as an emergency landing strip.
We finally arrived at Coober Pedy around 1.30pm and could already see the ground was pretty busy. Thank heaven we had booked in a few weeks back. School holidays are very apparent and the caravans, camper vans and cars continued to roll in one after the other from the time we arrived (as I write this at 8.00pm there are still arrivals).
We took a walk around the grounds at nightfall and it was absolutely a sight to behold. The one thing that really made me happy was listening to children play and the laughter of people sitting talking, enjoying a meal and a few drinks. We also remarked at the diverse range of accommodation of choice throughout the park. From the simplest of tents and swags to 5 star extravagant caravans, but each and every family enjoying their experience. How lucky we are to be free to get away for holidays such as these. Very few sites are vacant and it has been a super evening sitting back outside in the warm night and having a chat with our lovely neighbours Phil & Clare and their dog Murphy.
