Day 9 - Coober Pedy

Good morning Coober Pedy!

Thanks to the very early risers nearby who saw fit to be packing up their motorhome at 5.30am for a pre-dawn departure.  Good luck to them - it was bloody cold!  Bed was much warmer, but the noise was disturbing and I eventually gave up and got up, early enough to catch the first light on camera.

Having made a cup of tea and discovering that the milk was off despite still being 2 days in date, I opted instead for a shower at the amenities block at about 7.30am.  As I walked in a woman was standing there telling everyone who walked in the door that there was no toilet paper and as I showered I think she may have warned in the vicinity of another 30 women of the plight amid comments of disgust that this should happen.  After wandering back to the caravan I gave the office a call who said no-one had let them know and they would send someone down straight away and thanked me for letting them know.  Gee that was hard........

Many of the late arrivals last night pulled out very early this morning.  In fact I would say by 8.00am about a quarter of the park had been vacated.  I was a bit surprised, as this place is fascinating, but people are so often destination based and obviously CP was just an overnight stop on the way to their preferred location.

We've done the drive around Coober Pedy a couple of times now but there is always something to see and the landscape with all the piles of dirt from the mines is almost lunar in its unique design.  We spent the morning relaxing a little and after lunch did a bit of a drive around the township.

I hope their Sunday services are short because those chairs did NOT look very comfortable at all!

On our return to the caravan park there was a line that started well outside the grounds.... and went on.....

and on............................

and on!!!!  The park owners must absolutely love school holidays.  Thank heaven we booked well ahead.

Just before sunset we took a drive out to the Breakaways.  Our plan was to sit out the sunset there however despite being one of the first cars to arrive we were soon swamped with a large group of 4wd'ers who promptly backed up their vehicles so close to our car that we could barely open the doors and then proceeded set up chairs right in front of our car and theirs and then stand around drinking beer waiting for the sunset.  We couldn't see a thing so we decided to head back to camp and take some photos elsewhere along the way.

Outback sunsets are just amazing.  The camera simply doesn't do justice to the depth of colour.  And despite there often being no cloud to bounce the colours off - the light is just incredible and lasts so much longer than the colours at home.

On our return to the caravan park the line was yet again out the gate.  I feel for all these people setting up in the dark - that just can't be fun.  One of the things we've really been enjoying thanks to the super weather is just sitting at the van under the awning watching the world go by and enjoying a nice cold wine before starting dinner.  I truly envy those people who are fortunate enough to live this lifestyle by choice at any time rather than just relying on holidays for the opportunity.  Seeing this beautiful country and enjoying the company of Shane, sharing it all together, is just the best possible way to spend each and every day that I could imagine in life.
