Day 3 - Overland Corner Hotel - Burra

Good morning Overland Corner Hotel!

Well cold it was - that part remains uncontested!  We woke at about 5.30am - it was too dark and cold to get out of bed and both of us were very grateful that the four legged member of the party hadn't decided during the night to need an outing.  Snuggly tucked up in her new PJ's she snored her way through to about 8.30am.  By the time the sun actually made an appearance it was a glorious morning, with not a cloud in the sky and despite the chilly night and morning there was actually warmth in the sun and no cool breeze to spoil it.

We have always been fascinated by the changing scenery along the way.  One moment it's lush fields, then rocks, then scrubby bush land and over and over it changes.  There are so many things to see and indeed a few odd things that just appear a little out of place.  But it's the animals that I feel for most in these more rugged areas and the sadness for the loss of life of the many carcasses of kangaroos and emus that lie along the roadside, a constant source of food for the birds of prey that feed on them.  And welcome to South Australia with it's slightly weird looking power poles.

We arrived at our destination - Burra - just after lunch and soon had everything in place in time for a quick look around the town, buy some fuel and replenish a few groceries.  The showgrounds is our home for the next couple of nights until we head to Port Pirie, our last stop before heading north again.  Our last trip through here we wished that we had had more time to look around as Burra has a rich history and is a quaint little town promising quite a few photo opportunities.  Our host - caretaker Artie and his little four legged friend Elle were entertaining and we were blessed with warmth and sunshine while we had a late lunch and enjoyed some rest time.

  1. Overland Corner, nice spot, but don’t stress about missing the meal. Although we went in early for ours, they were wanting to close early being Sunday night but the lady very graciously offered to do fish & chips. $41 later we had fish & chips handed to us in takeaway containers. Tasted good though.
