Day 52 - Campaspe River - Townsville

Good morning Campaspe River!

It was an interesting night with a regular interruption of the peaceful quiet of the bush by tossers driving by in both trucks and cars thinking it was obviously amusing to beep their horn as they passed by the rest area.  Given there were about 14 caravans, campers and vans parked up for the night - most of which were visible from the road - I guess we were easy targets but it makes you wonder what possible interference we all had with their daily lives that warranted interfering with our sleep.  Not just one, but at least 8 passers-by throughout the night felt the urge to share the fact that they had a working horn.

Thankfully Mr ImHereLateAndIWantTheBestSpot pulled out early, but not before making a significant amount of noise packing up in the dark.  At least he was consistent coming and going.  Frankly after all of this I was just grateful to know that the fridge had worked all night on gas and the freezer was still running - yes I'm easily pleased.

Which brings us to our next conversation which started by watching the couple behind us in a rooftop tent.  We're always happy and interested to see what everyone else camps in and while some of it just isn't for us (especially those we know would cause us discomfort especially for sleeping) we acknowledge that it's great people get out there and see the country however they can.  I remarked that a rooftop tent would probably result in issues when needing to pee urgently at 3.00am and slipping down the ladder and breaking an ankle, to which Shane responded "it would be worse for boys who might slip down the ladder and......... well it could be worse for boys".  We clearly need to spend less time watching our neighbours.

Not much to report on the road from Campaspe River to Townsville other than more bumpy road.  There was however a significant amount of wattle flowering which always gives me a lift at this time of year when we see it flowering down south as it is a definite indication that Spring is coming.

I wonder if anyone thought the advertising on this truck could have been designed a little better.  What was that phone number again?

The dust in the air is incredible causing a haze across the landscape that looks like thick smoke so Shane couldn't really get any interesting shots of the terrain leading in.

Finally back to the tropics we arrived in Townsville but having a pile of washing to do meant that my afternoon was taken care of.  I am very grateful that we will be here now for 6 nights which means no more morning pack-ups and the opportunity to have a bit of a sleep-in now and then.  I know that Miss Kitty will be very happy to wake up each of those mornings and find that her pen is still set up and she doesn't have to get back in the car for hours.  She loves her easy mornings relaxing under the awning but of course the night before travelling we pack everything up.  It's a little cooler here than it has been west and north but still a lovely evening to have dinner outside under the awning and with still a month to go on our trip we have lots more to see and do.
