Day 54 - Townsville

Good morning Townsville!

Nothing like a good sleep-in to refresh you!  We woke early enough to say goodbye to our Cousin neighbours as they headed off for home and then had a very relaxed morning.  Miss Kitty having the most relaxed morning - not raising her head off the pillow until almost 10.00am.

We headed out after lunch with Shane getting a much needed haircut at a local hairdresser and then a visit to brother Joe for a couple of hours before going for a drive around Townsville central for a look.  Our tour started with Cootharinga or Castle Hill as it is more commonly known, a heritage listed pink granite mountain right at the edge of the city centre and actually a Townsville suburb of its own merit with around 1,000 residents houses clinging to the sides of the rock faces.

Rising to 286 metres above sea level you can drive up to the top via a barely two lane bitumen road which is also obviously very popular amongst fit locals as we would have passed over 200 people either making their way up or down "the hill".  This in itself was an amazing sight because cars, walkers, joggers, cyclists and dogs all share the same roadway making the drive somewhat precarious.  The views from the top however are spectacular and despite a thick smokey haze from a couple of nearby fires, there was a stunning view from almost every angle including that of nearby Magnetic Island just off the coast.

On the way to "The Strand" which runs along the coastline we passed by the local gardens and I had to stop and take a photo of these two trees - so many interesting types of trees here.

Following the road around we came to the stunning Jezzine House which forms part of the barracks at Kissing Point.  We really only just did a drive by but might look around all of this area a little more tomorrow.

We spotted a gelati shop and decided to stop for an ice-cream before driving a little further around to capture a few sunset shots and then headed home to the van grabbing a pizza for dinner.  All round a nice relaxing day.
